To Post or Not To Post?

I'll make a very quick post...

A friend who visited my blog recently commented that it's not really 'safe' to post pictures of myself and close ones on my blog. His reason? 'Because you never know who comes to your blog..there are a lot of weird people out there.' The paranoid part of me agrees with him. You never know which psychodelic is lurking on the other side of the computer. But another part of me just want to post pictures as a means of update for my friends...most people prefer looking at pictures than reading long entries anyway. For the most part though, i really can't be bothered with it.

I cant say i've been to many blogs..but i've notice people don't usually put up pictures of themselves. This is perhaps due to privacy reasons? On the other end of the spectrum, there are those who'll virtually post anything..even pictures of their certificates. ( i've seen them!)

Really, how much is too much? Are we revealing too much of our life by posting personal pictures? Would you do it? Or if you already did, did you ever encounter any weird stuff?

Hi Nat!,
Finally a post after so many days. I hope you are enjoying your work. Yes, sometimes it's not advisable to post personal pictures in your blog, as you have mentioned u never know who is visiting your blog and what kind of a person is.

I guess i am comfortable with the idea of posting personal pictures. Yes i have come across some weird bloggers on blogspot:).

Keep blogging!!!

True. Not publishing pictures do protects you and more importantly, you are able to connect and let the inner most you to come out, without being judged.

Hi Viv,

Nice to hear from you again :) work is good..busy sometimes but i'm really enjoying myself. how's life in the new office? hope you're settling down well.

Anonymous- i think you made a good point...that not posting your personal pictures means less people will judge you. Although i do think posting your own pictures should not affect whether you let your inner most come out.

The best part is that we can trash weird comments on our blogs..so thankfully, it's still within our control to a certain extent.

Just my opinion of coarse but I tend to think that unless the picture you are posting gives a clue as to how to get to you, its not a threat. I mean hello I have tons of them on mine. And unless they know the interior of the home I am in or the car or what ever. They aint finding me. Personally you have seen my site. It is a very in depth picture of who I am in words. I think my poetry tells more about me than any picture ever could. And the only reason my pic isnt up on my profile is I cant figure out how to get it up there!

I think it is kind of nice to put a face to a blog...it makes the blogging experience more personal and interesting. When I visit a blog with no photo posted it always makes me a little curious as to why they chose not to...a bad hair day, not very photogenic, shy, don't feel like being self centered... or is it just that the person is leary of the internet, as your friend suggested.

I guess I am still trusting...haven't had any bad experiences, and therefore still feel pretty safe about posting pix. Ummm.... in fact I just posted one of myself...so, I guess that just goes to show that I'm not feeling too inhibited (or maybe it's that I'm just feeling a tad bit self-centered today...anyway isn't that the point of a blog...?!??!)

Hey.. feels funny posting a comment on ur blog when i can just pick up the phone and call u :) but seeing how I’m 'techsavy' n all... I think posting pictures is a great idea. A pic says a thousand words. If ur setting out to share ur thoughts and feelings through a blog then what better way to post ur expressions than through the medium of photographs. whoever told you that putting pictures up is a bad idea is paranoid. According to him, the next time we fill out a form or job application that needs a picture or the next party we go to where someone has a camera we’re in trouble :p god know what they might do with the pic!!

hey..i think you guys raised some valid points. photos do personlise a blog, talking about self-centerness, melissa, the same friend commented that my blog appears to be 'whiny' and 'egoistical'. in fact i havent got over those comments. i thought i just wanted an avenue to vent all my nonsense. naturally, i got defensive because my blog is my 'baby'. haha

coming back to the photos...i think most of you would agree that putting up personal photos is still very acceptable and safe..unless of course, like hulai said, we reveal private details or clues as to where we live and all. That's kindda where the line is drawn.

i definitely agree with melissa that posting a picture of yourself put a face to the blog, the author. it's really kinda nice, somehow, like knowing a real person..

the mysterious ranger!!:) - yes, a picture says a thousand words, maybe more..there are definitely things in photographs that are beyond what we can put in words.

guys, i'll be checking your sites for more photos soon!

It is a question we ask ourselves, but I have met so many really cool people through blogs that Iam willing to risk it.

As far as pictures go we really must be careful once a picture has been transfered over the internet in anyway there is no way one can be sure it can ever be fully deleted. Also be aware that these blogs show up on google.

Me personally I blog for the global interaction, and love every part of it. Hope this comforts your paranoid side Nat.

Take care,

I keep intending to get my picture posted on my blog, but so far life keeps getting in the way. I will eventually.

However, my husband and I don't post pictures of our daughter on any websites. Too many scary people out there to entrust them with our most important thing in the world. (Hmmm, just called my daughter a thing. lol)

janet, as a matter of fact,i was thinking it's much more unsafe to post pictures of young teens or kids than it is to post pics of adults- just cos those they are vulnerable and unaware of sharks lurking on the Net. so i think its wise you're keeping pics of your daughter out of the way.

SC, likewise, i've met alot of great people through my blog and the pros of posting pics seem to have outweighed the risks.most people here have not encountered weirdos. however, i also have this thinking that girls are more likely to fall prey..call it biased but i think that's the way it is.

i think my friend raised this concern because he has read so many horror stories that happened as a result of the Net..esp in the chatting arena i.e ICQ.

jadebange- you make me laugh.as usual.

you guys are great!
