Up, up and Up!

I'm seriously pissed! They've done it again! They've raised the prices of movie tickets yet again..barely after two years of price adjustment.

Movies have always been one of the greatest, best indulgences for Kamahl and I..we love watching movies. A typical date for us almost always consist of a movie plus dinner. Now with the price hikes (kicked in last Saturday), we've decided to turn to Cineleisure and Shaw House for our movies. They are the only organisations who are not raising prices. For most theatres, tickets will now cost $9.50 each on weekends and fridays! Weekdays tickets are not much better- between S$7-8.50. And forget popcorn. They cost almost as much as the stupid tickets.

How are they going to win the fight against piracy if they keep raising prices... I don't condone pirarcy but really, think about it, if it cost someone $3-10 to buy a pirated movie and keep it for life, why not? A typical movie date will easily come up more than 20 bucks anyway. Hey, we can count too! For every dollar you increase, you stand to lose ten other loyal movie patrons somewhere. The reasons they gave for raising prices hardly seem justified too. (We didnt asked for cushier seats, did we?)

Costs keep going up. For a change, somebody should lower prices.

Now, that would really grab our attention, wouldn't it?

yes phantom, i forgot about the transport home! geez..if we catch a late movie that finishes at midnite, transport home gets really expensive! cab rides here cost 50%more after midnite..so say a $10 ride would cost $15 at midnite.

So there you have it...a nite out in singapore is crazy expensive :(

I guess it happens everywhere in the world, Bangalore has the Steepest Entertainment Taxes in the country. The government gives 101 reasons for the rise of the taxes, but as u said they are gonna loose some loyal movie patrons.

If i can buy DVD for Rs150/- why shld i bother to go catch a movie in a multiplex which would cost me the same.

Ranger! Awwwwww..see you later :)Kingdom of Heaven!

Jack, I havent watch kungfu hustle...i just don't like Stephan Chow for some reasons that i can't explain. I've heard it's pretty well received in the States. Anyway, I'm not a big fan of chinese drama- they're very soap-opera-liked. (although they impart better values than american shows!)

I've often thought that reality TV has de-humanised us to a great extend. They glamorised all the worst traits in us..overtime, people just come to accept this sort of behavior as 'normal' and 'acceptable'. (But then again, I can't complain because I DO watch some of these programs.I would like to think that I can discern some of these traits!)

What are your thoughts on these? let's hear them.

Exactly Viv, this is why rising movie ticket prices can contribute to piracy. But it's not true
that this applies internationally.

I've watched movies in bangkok where tickets are less than half of what they cost here. What's more, the facilities there are OUTSTANDINGLY better! The theatre is much more comfortable and I got freebies like notebooks, magnets and tissues for buying 2 tickets...haha. I'm no freeloader but hey, i got a lot more for a lot less!

(Does that make any sense? :))

You know heres what I dont get...
You know its not like with gas where supply is down so prices are up. No there are more movies every day. So wouldnt it make sense for them not to be so expensive? I mean the more of them there are the less they should cost if you go with the supply and demand tactic.. But since that wont be happening due to how much some of those freaks get paid.. I guess we will continue to pay outrageous prices for tickets...

@viv- I'm not only going to be selective with the movies..i'm going to select the places too. Not all cinema operaters here are raising prices- this goes to show that they are STILL VERY PROFITABLE even before raising prices.

@hulai- yes,i agree...with such outrageous prices (and therefore profit margins), its no wonder they keep churning movies. Here, demand and supply of movies is relatively high. Singaporeans watch alot of movies (largely because there really is not much to do..)

what really pissed me off is how ittle we can do about it. no matter how much we protest, nothing is likely to change.

WEll they cost so much to make just because the actors are getting so much. They have to make that back in order to pay the actors. Think like this... If in the opening weekend of a Johnny Depp movie, it makes about 40 million dollars its only just barely paid Johnny and a few of the workers. Only a few! Thats crazy! I love him. But damn....
